As the Detroit Red Wings prepare for Thursday’s season opener at Tampa Bay, lines are taking shape.

Plans for tonight s exhibition finale between the Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Joe Louis Arena 7, FSD had http://www.detredwingsjersey.com/petr-mrazek-jersey-c-32.html captain Henrik Zetterberg making his first appearance since dealing with a sore knee, on a line with Frans Nielsen and Tomas Tatar. Riley Sheahan is to start tonight between Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou, but the latter two are vulnerable because they are waiver exempt. Blashill has Dylan Larkin and Darren Helm as centers, leaving Justin Abdelkader http://www.detredwingsjersey.com/brendan-smith-jersey-c-28.html, Thomas Vanek, Gustav Nyquist, Teemu Pulkkinen and Sheahan to fill the wing spots.

The Drew Miller http://www.detredwingsjersey.com/jimmy-howard-jersey-c-30.html, Luke Glendening and Steve Ott line played Friday.

The Wings have to trim their roster to 23 by 5 p.m. Tuesday, and Blashill has said the team will carry eight defensemen, leaving 13 spots open for forwards. It doesn t make sense for young guys Mantha or Athanasiou to be in Detroit if they are not going to play. Today s game is to be the fifth exhibition appearance for both.

“The guys that we feel are going to give us our best chance to win in Tampa are going to play in Tampa,” Blashill said when asked about his regular season lineup. “We’ll see where everything shakes out.”

Athanasiou impressed with his speed and ability to create offense last season and admitted it would be disappointing if he has to start the season in the minors.

“There are a lot of players here, a lot of good players,” he said. “You have to put that aside and go play your game, and the rest will take care of itself.

“It would be unfortunate Andreas Athanasiou Jersey, but I’m going to do the best I can to try to make it not happen.”

The potential for Wings scoring depth means that Blashill plans to rely on every line.

“I would say the minute distribution would be more even than it was last year and I would also include the fourth line on that,” Blashill said. “I think we are going to have to be a four line team. We are going to need to have depth of scoring. And then we’ve got to be real good about being merit based.

“I’ve said to assistant coach John Torchetti, You have to scream at me on the bench if you think a line is playing that I’m not playing enough. We have to make sure we are doing a good job being merit based. We are not going to be centered around one or two superstars, we are going to be centered around a team concept.”

OTTAWA, Ontario AP — Guy Boucher trusted his instincts when selecting skaters for the shootout and it paid off for the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators head coach opted to go with defenseman Erik Karlsson and the captain scored the game winner to give Ottawa a 4 3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night to open the season with back to back wins.

Sometimes it s just small things and you follow a gut feeling, Boucher said. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn t. Sometimes you look like a genius and sometimes you look like an idiot, this time I look like a genius.

Despite some struggles through its first two games Ottawa is finding ways to win. The Senators had a great start on Saturday http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/erik-karlsson-jersey-c-22.html, struggled midway, but came back strong and feel they can build off the effort.

I think it was a well played game by both teams http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/cody-ceci-jersey-c-19.html, Karlsson said. We did what we had to do even though they scored two in the third. It didn t set us back. We kept going and stuck to our game plan and we didn t let ourselves stray away from what we felt we had to do to have a chance to win this game.

Tom Pyatt, Ryan Dzingel and Zack Smith scored for the Senators 2 0 0 in regulation and Craig Anderson had 21 saves.

Jeff Petry scored twice and Artturi Lehkonen got his first NHL goal for the Canadiens. Al Montoya stopped 35 shots.

Canadiens coach Michel Therrien was pleased with the overall effort, but falling behind early made things difficult.

Our execution wasn t there at the start of the game, said Therrien. We made some adjustments in the second and it seemed to pay off.

Pyatt tied the score 3 3 off a great pass from Dzingel to beat Montoya stick side with 2 33 remaining in the third period.

Dzingel was impressive all night and was rewarded for his efforts Clarke MacArthur Jersey, getting ice time in the overtime session.

I think I m getting a little bit more confident and coach is playing me in bigger situations so just trying to grow my confidence and keep playing the way I do, Dzingel said. I m bringing pace and speed and that s all I m worrying about.

Dzingel and Smith scored in the first period to put the Senators up 2 0 as they outshot the Canadiens 13 6 and had some solid work on the penalty kill.

Dzingel opened the scoring at the 6 minute mark with a great personal effort as he picked up his own rebound and beat Montoya short side. Dennis Wideman s point shot deflected in off Smith s skate with 4 10 left in the period.

Petry s power play goal with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the second got the Canadiens on the scoreboard. Lehkonen tied it at 2 50 of the third http://www.senatorshockeygear.com/mark-borowiecki-jersey-c-18.html, grabbing a loose puck and sliding it through Anderson s legs.

Ottawa couldn t capitalize on a two man advantage for 1 49 as they failed to create any real scoring chances and the game stayed tied.

That 5 on 3 kill gave us a lot of strength, Lehkonen said. We found a way in the third period to bounce back and really fight for the win.

Petry s second then put Montreal at the 9 minute mark as his shot from inside the blue line beat a screened Anderson.

Florida opened the scoring midway ElvaFeng on 16/10/16
SUNRISE, Fla. AP The Florida Panthers all took the ice for warmups wearing No. 16 jerseys with Fernandez on the back, a tribute to late Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.

How fitting, then, that the Panthers real No. 16 got the game winner in overtime.

Aleksander Barkov scored 2 48 into the extra session, and the Panthers topped the New Jersey Devils 2 1 on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

You can tell that something s been going on, Panthers defenseman Michael Matheson said, especially now that No. 16 gets the overtime winner.

Matheson set up the winner Keith Kinkaid Jersey, knocking New Jersey s Damon Severson off the puck behind the net http://www.devilsteamgear.com/andy-greene-jersey-c-19.html, then spinning and finding Barkov alone in the right circle. Barkov one timed the puck past Cory Schneider, and the Panthers spilled onto the ice in celebration.

He was my favorite baseball player, Barkov said of Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident last month. I don t really watch baseball http://www.devilsteamgear.com/jon-merrill-jersey-c-22.html, but I knew him, I knew he was playing in Miami and it was a big loss for all of South Florida and for all of America.

Roberto Luongo stopped 23 shots for Florida, the last two of those coming in the final 2 minutes of regulation. Schneider stopped 32 shots for the Devils, including all 16 he faced in the third period.

They came at us pretty hard in the third but we got a point, Schneider said. A couple breakdowns in the overtime and they put it in.

P.A. Parenteau, claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders earlier this week http://www.devilsteamgear.com/devante-smithpelly-jersey-c-18.html, scored for the Devils. Jonathan Marchessault got the scoring for the night started for Florida.

And without Luongo s heroics late, Panthers fans wouldn t have gone home happy.

He stopped Taylor Hall s one timer from the low slot as a mass of bodies swarmed his crease, then got his glove out just far enough to grab Andy Greene s slap shot from the left point with 29.9 seconds remaining.

Florida controlled play in the OT, and got its first home overtime win since March 30, 2013 also against New Jersey.

That s my fault there, Severson said of the final play against Matheson. I got the puck in the corner, won the battle, and I tried to go behind the net. I heard reverse. I knew we had tired guys out there and I didn t want to just throw it away. I ended up tripping up on the skate and there was a back door play there. Tough play to end the game.

The Devils went to the Stanley Cup final in 2012 and haven t seen the postseason since, in a rebuilding place where Florida seemed to be perpetually stuck until the last couple seasons. The Panthers won the Atlantic Division last season and even without injured forwards Nick Bjugstad and Jonathan Huberdeau to start the season think they have enough to contend for a title.

We start a new era of the Florida Panthers this year, Panthers owner Vincent Viola said before the game. You ll see new uniforms on the team, you re going to see a whole bunch of new faces on the ice ... and there s only one purpose and one mission to win the Stanley Cup.

The first two goals of the night bounced off Devils skaters.

Florida opened the scoring midway through the first when Marchessault s shot was saved by Schneider, who actually knocked the puck into defenseman Ben Lovejoy and watched it ricochet into the net. New Jersey tied it in the final minute of the period, when Yohann Auvitu s shot from the right point was deflected by a leaping Parenteau.

That was it, until Barkov s dramatic winner.

Unbelievable, Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said.
Mike almost felt it ElvaFeng on 16/10/16
Sixteen months ago, when Brendan Shanahan told Mike Babcock that the franchise’s 100th birthday was coming up soon, he recalled the new coach sweating the timing.

“Mike almost felt it was too soon,” the club president said of his new head coach. “He wanted the team to be a little more developed at this time of celebration . I believe he thinks right now it’s the perfect time to have that transition, with the amount of young players here.”

The youngest team in the NHL has its home opener tonight against Boston and, despite a looming 50 year Cup drought and possibly the 11th time in 12 years they miss the playoffs, it’s going to be a warm reception. They’ll also be in front of a legion of Toronto’s golden era stars who’ve jumped out of the picture frames that line the ACC walls for the centennial gala.

But Shanahan says the time has come for these Leafs to make their own mark and not worry about 1917, 1967 or 2017 for that matter.

“Look, my feeling is if history — and a successful history — are too much of a burden for you as an athlete, you really aren’t going to be successful anywhere, even in a market where no one watches the games. These guys put pressure on themselves.

“You already saw the way this city, last year http://www.mapleleafsjerseystore.com/matt-hunwick-jersey-c-27.html, just embraced their work ethic and the commitment the players gave.”

Shanahan’s message was re enforced by a surprise guest who addressed the media before him Club icon Dave Keon, newly named as the greatest of 100 Leafs listed by a centennial voting panel.

“When you played here, you were always in the public eye,” Keon said. “That was part of being a Maple Leaf. When I played junior B, there was coverage. When I played junior A, there was coverage. When you got to the Leafs, it wasn’t as traumatic I guess as it is probably now for some kids who come here and weren’t exposed to any of that. It was part of the training you got to becoming a Leaf.

“You have to embrace the challenge. That’s what they’re going to have to try and do. Get better every year and then hopefully http://www.mapleleafsjerseystore.com/jake-gardiner-jersey-c-26.html, put themselves in a position where they can win. It doesn’t happen overnight, it’s going to take a little while. But it seems they’re getting the right players.”

That company line has been heard many times since Keon, George Armstrong and Johnny Bower carried the Cup off the Gardens ice to the dressing room back in 1967. But as the ‘Shanaplan’ moves along, it doesn’t ring so hollow. The Leafs have finally committed fully to the rebuild route, a near complete tear down and a core roster that now contains five first round draft picks, including No. 1 overall Auston Matthews.

Matthews electrified the city with a record four goal debut on Wednesday in Ottawa, yet no one is talking about a fast track to playoffs. Everyone has bought in from the hockey office, to the players, to the fans to MLSE, apparently willing to suffer the loss of more millions in lost revenue through a few more dark springs at the ACC.

More than 20 Marlies were called up last year, including William Nylander, while Mitch Marner has joined Matthews on the rookie beat. Watching Matthews’ magic should make this season a lot more bearable, whether the Leafs are out of contention again by mid season or not.

Shanahan and general manager Lou Lamoriello tried to look composed as TV cameras trained on them in Ottawa for reaction to Matthews’ four goals.

“What was I thinking?,” Shanahan laughed. “We were all impressed. You can’t beat that. Forget the fact we’re in Toronto. If you’re just a fan of hockey and see a young person do that ... what impressed me most is the responsibility he took for a mistake he made poor coverage on Ottawa’s overtime 3 on 3 winner .

“Auston says all the right things. We’re very happy with the way he acts, the way he treats his teammates and obviously the way he plays. But this isn’t about just one player and he knows it. It’s about a process and building a team. You have to have that because the other teams are just too good.

“We’re building a team here, not just the rookies, but the veterans who have worked so hard and have really bought into what Mike and Lou are doing.”

The Leafs are transitioning from 100 to 001 as Shanahan likes to say.

THE SHOW GOES ON AND ON AND ON

From deadmau5 to the 48th Highlanders to a who’s who of Maple Leafs greats, it’s going to be an interesting — and lengthy — intro to the franchise’s 100th birthday before Toronto and Boston face off.

Fans are advised to be seated by 5 30 to catch all festivities, with TV coverage beginning at 6 p.m., an hour before puck drop. Players often dread opening night theatrics that can upset their warmup if they stand around too long, but Mike Babcock will have none of it, keeping his team in the room as long as he can.

“I don’t get involved in game production,” the coach said. “We’re just going to go out, get introduced, they’ll play the anthem and we’ll play. The rest of that stuff is for the fans.”

Late team founder Conn Smythe would be happy the Highlanders pipe band is still part of opening night after 85 years, but he might not get deadmau5. The Niagara Falls electronic music producer — real name Joel Zimmerman — wears a mouse helmet while performing, has 3.6 million Twitter followers and counts Don Cherry among his fans. He’s also a huge Leafs fan and has created a fan themed track for the occasion.

Together with new game night personnel such as 15 year old anthem singer Martina Ortiz Luis, it’s part of club president Brendan Shanahan’s push to honour the club’s past and provide something for the future.
