Here are my takeaways on the 4 plays as well. Play 1:Formation: Trips LEFT to short side of field, with TE also to that side, tight to the line, but one step back. Shotgun with QB and RB in pistol (RB directly behind QB).Play call, READ OPTION RIGHT.Key: QB is reading the DE (edge). If the DE tries to play both the RB and the QB, the QB will keep the ball and run wide to the right. Why the play is clever: Kingsbury knows that if the DE bites, his QB has one man to beat to the pylon. If that QB is Kyler Murray, as they say, fuggettaboutit. How NFL DCs will counter: with 4 receivers to the short side of the field, the defense will switch into a zone and keep their alignment balanced. The 4 receivers are so bunched that DCs will think the 4 WRs could be zoned by 3 players (2 under and 1 deep).KK’s counter to the DC’s counter---check into an RPO (run-pass option), same read option to the RIGHT but drag 2-3 of the receivers over the middle behind the linebackers in the zone. One of the WRs is bound to be wide open._______________________________________________________________________________________Play 2:Formation: 2 TEs (tight to formation), 2 WR on opposite sides. Shotgun with QB behind center and RB lined up over the G to the QB’s LEFT. Right side (short side) WR motions toward wide side but then reverse motions back---this is to check if the defense is playing man or zone---in this case no DB or LB chases Budda Baker Jersey 2019 , so they know it’s a zone.Play call: X FAKE SLANT FADE LEFT.Key and why it’s clever: the X WR wants to sell the slant and make the CB play inside leverage so that when the X WR stops and turns for the fade he has almost 1/3 of the end zone worth of room. How NFL DCs will counter: have the CB play the X WR straight up and have the FS sit on the slant so that the CB can sit on the fade or jump the out pass.KK’s counter to the DC’s counter: When he and the QB sees that the FS is shading toward the X WR, that’s when the door is open to run the RIGHT SIDE TE on a quick POST, literally to the goal post.. _______________________________________________________________________________________Play 3:Formation: DOUBLE TWINS IN BUNCH FORMATION (WRs on l.o.s. 2 yards wide of tackles with slot WRs tucked in on the outside legs of the tackles. Wide flanker (out of picture to start) MOTIONS NEXT TO QB’s LEFT.Play call: FAKE READ OPTION RIGHT, SHOVEL PASS SLOT WR JET SWEEP LEFT.Key and why it’s clever: Classic misdirection QB sleight of hand counter play. The fake is so good the defense can’t adjust in time.NFL DC’s counter: to tell his edge players to keep contain and turn the plays inside---the DE to the playside gets trapped inside and gives up contain and with it, a TD.KK’s counter to DC’s counter: knowing that next time the edge players will try to keep contain, then cut the jet sweep inside as BA did with Larry Fitzgerald in the Wild Card OT win versus the Packers. _______________________________________________________________________________________Play 4:Formation: TWINS (TE tight to line LEFT with slot WR to his outside shoulder behind line---and X RIGHT, with slot WR motioning to LEFT). Shotgun, RB to LEFT of QB. QB waits for slot WR to get to a stop all the way wide to the LEFT (creating a 4 receiver side to the left---just like the Play 2 only it’s now to the wide side of the field instead of the short side). Seeing as in Play 2 they loaded one side of the field to create a one-on-one matchup for the X WR, the defense is going to think they are doing the same thing.Play call: Fake QB DRAW RIGHT, Throwback screen to RB LEFT with 3 receivers setting the blocks.Key and why it’s clever: the defense gets so worried about the QB threatening to run that it flows toward the ball, leaving them too far way from the back side or at perfect angles to be blocked by the 3 receivers.NFL DC’s counter: zone it like this opponent did, but the LB to the side of the RB got influenced toward the fake QB draw Black Robert Nkemdiche Jersey , while the RB was slipping out wide to the left. Thus, the DC has to make sure that his linebackers stay home and react quickly that lengthy a pass to blow up the play. KK’s counter to DC’s counter: tell the QB to run the ball next time...there’s one LB to beat and if the X WR can block the CB, it’s a TD. This throwback screen is actually a counter to the read option call in Play 1. _______________________________________________________________________________________Concepts:* Overloading the short side to creating equal numbers to the wide side of the field---with fast runners and big WRs, this means favorable isolation matchups.* Note----overloading any side of a zone is a good thing to do to stretch and break the zones.* Note---the adjustment KK will have to make in the NFL is the hash marks are not nearly as wide. But the basic concepts of these plays should still work.* Misdirection---get the LBs to bite and then counter and/or go opposite. * Create as much clear space for end zone throws as possible. * Use QB as a nifty ballhandler. Don’t keep him stationary for too long. Shift the pocket from time to time.* Notice KK using TEs more than one might originally think---flexed---and tight---and off-set (H-back style).* Use motion to load one side or balance one side---but, n both cases---to see if the defense is playing man or zone.* Note---in all 4 plays the defense is playing zone. That is no coincidence because when DCs know Kingsbury is playing a numbers game on the defense and employing all kinds of misdirection, the DC would prefer to keep a balanced formation. Just think of what adding and accurate thrower and swift running QB like Kyler Murray means to that equation. Again---the Cardinals are going to see more zones than ever before. Teams won’t want to risk vacating parts of the field. * Plus, the spread forces defenses to line up wider away from the box than they would like. That’s why the widening of the box makes for more exploitable numbers in the running game. Thanks to Brian Baldinger for his excellent video. By the way---these concepts are by no means exotic---as Mike Leach has been saying all along, Air Raid concepts are more and more prevalent in the NFL today. The key is acquiring the right players with the right skills to make these concepts work. Could the Alabama Defensive Tackle be the no. 1 overall pick?"Much of the focus of the Arizona Cardinals Pre-Draft Conference was about Josh Rosen and whether a quarterback would be taken with their no. 1 overall pick. When GM Steve Keim was asked about Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, he had nothing but good things to say about him.“Dominant defender,” Steve Keim said of Williams. “ I know that his production is more so this year but I mean an interior player that is that dominating at that size has been fun to watch.”Williams is coming off his first season as a full-time starter where he had 71 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and eight sacks. Despite Keim acknowledging the negative of Williams with 2018 being his only year of production Robert Nkemdiche Jersey 2019 , the Alabama prospect was dominating to say the least. For a 6-3 303 pound player, it was shocking to see him run as fast as he did posting a 4.83 second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He went on to compare Williams to some of the better defensive tackles in NFL history.“Kind of reminds me back in days of when I went and watched [Richard] Seymour and [Marcus] Stroud and [John] Henderson and those guys coming out of big dominating presence that can take over games.”Stroud and Henderson duo formed arguably the best interior defensive line in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars from ‘02-’07. The duo made it impossible for running backs to run up the middle. Seymour was well-known for his time with the New England Patriots, racking 57.5 sacks in his 12-year NFL career.Maybe one game was more than enough to convince Keim to take Williams.“You watch the LSU game and it was almost a highlight tape”There are two things that Keim always points out that are hard to judge: the heart and the mind. Williams has interviewed well with NFL teams. He even ran the 40-yard dash twice, when his agent told him not to. For a player that has that much confidence in his own abilities, he must love football.NFL Hall of Famer and NFL Networks’ Willie McGinest can support this claim. So far, Quinnen Williams checks off a lot of the boxes for the Cardinals. The 21-year-old would give the team a young big-bodied athletic presence on the defensive line, a position that still remains an area of need. Even with only one year of great production, he did so in a conference (SEC) against some of the best players college football had to offer. His heart is with football and he seems like a player that really loves the game. With NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport reporting that it is unlikely for Williams to make it to the Jets at three, either the Cardinals or 49ers will take him. What are your thoughts about Williams? Who will the Cardinals take with the no. 1 overall pick?

Let’s be blunt about what we want from the NFC playoffs: The Saints to lose. New Orleans fans have Damontae Kazee Jersey 2019 , over the last few seasons, weaponized pettiness to the point where no accomplishment or Falcons failure passes without comment, and that disdain is very mutual. We don’t want the Saints to go to the Super Bowl in Atlanta, and we definitely don’t want them to win it. Viewed through that lens, the NFC playoffs are just a question of who has the best shot of beating the Saints, and our rooting interest pours toward that team. Let’s take a look at the Wild Card round with the Saints and Rams off this weekend.Saturday: #5 Seattle at #4 Dallas Black Brandon Fusco Jersey , 8:15 p.m. ET Both of these teams could, at the very least, give the Saints a run for their money. It seems incredible after their lousy start to the year, but Dallas has turned into a team no one wants to play thanks to a sometimes suffocating defense. They started New Orleans’ mini-skid when they stunningly held the Saints to under 200 yards, with the Saints mostly playing greatly diminished football since being punched in the mouth by Dallas. There’s plenty of reason to think the Cowboys can do so again with New Orleans in a bit of a rut and kicking off two weeks of rust on offense, as they’ve scored over 30 points just once in the last five weeks. The problem Brandon Fusco Jersey 2019 , of course, is that they’ll only play New Orleans if they win and the Bears do too. The optimal nightmare path for the Saints is probably Dallas and then Chicago, if they do make it by the Cowboys, so I’m fine with that outcome generally. Dallas is certainly capable of taking care of this Seattle offense, though Russell Wilson is so good (and at this point, maybe even underrated) that he’ll provide a legitimate challenge even for this re-tooled D. Could the Seahawks be a problem for New Orleans Black Terrell McClain Jersey , too? Sure. They have a surprisingly potent offense and their defense has rebounded, which means they can control the tempo of the game and keep the Saints at bay. I’ll take either team here if it comes to it, but I like Dallas’ chances a bit better because they’ve already shown they can shut down this offense. Pick: Dallas #6 Philadelphia at #3 Chicago, 4:40 p.m. ET It’s amazing that Philly clawed their way back here. In many ways, their season reminds you of the 2017 Falcons year, when an NFC Super Bowl team looked lousy for long stretches of the year but was still good enough to make the postseason. For that reason alone Terrell McClain Jersey 2019 , I won’t be guilty of taking Philadelphia lightly.Their opponent isn’t going to be an easy out at all. The Bears have been great under Matt Nagy, with Mitch Trubisky doing enough to keep them in games and the defense doing more than enough to win them. This Chicago defense has been hell for a lot of good offenses in 2019, and I like their chances of putting the brakes on New Orleans as much as any other team in their way. I also think that Philly with Nick Foles at the helm is going to have trouble putting up points, so if the Bears offense is at least halfway competent they should win this.Pick: ChicagoPlease let one of these teams beat the Saints. Bruce Irvin didn’t stay unemployed for long.Irvin, who passed through waivers after the Raiders cut him, is signing with the Falcons Jordan Miller Atlanta Falcons Jersey , the team announced this morning. It was unsurprising that no team picked Irvin up on waivers, given that it would have required paying him $3.8 million the rest of the season. But it’s also unsurprising that he was quickly signed once he became a free agent. The Falcons’ struggling defense will benefit from Irvin’s help as a pass rusher, even if they’re paying him some amount less than $3.8 million. The 31-year-old Irvin has three sacks so far this season. He had a career-high eight sacks last season.Irvin played two seasons in Seattle when Falcons head coach Dan Quinn was the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator, so it shouldn’t be hard for him to get up to speed in Atlanta’s defense. Irvin is expected to play for the Falcons on Sunday against the Browns.

The new-look Ravens have another winnable ‘must-win’ game on tap. Following their crucial home victory over the Bengals Best Mark Andrews Jersey , Baltimore will host the lowly Raiders in Week 12. Now 5-5, John Harbaugh’s club must continue stacking wins to remain in contention for a wild card bid.The Ravens lead the all-time series between these franchises with an 7-3 record that includes a 16-3 beatdown during the 2000 postseason and a 30-17 road win last October. On Sunday, Oakland snapped a five-game slide with a late field goal that propelled them to an upset win against the Cardinals. Baltimore’s league best scoring defense will have a mismatch against the Raiders 30th ranked scoring offense. Oddsmakers have installed Baltimore as 11-point favorites with the point total set at 43, implying a final score of 27-16. Trends favor the Ravens who are 26-0 as a double digit favorite since their founding and 14-7 at home since 2016. Jon Gruden’s 2-8 squad is 1-7 as an underdog and 1-4 on the road this season.Three key matchups:LB C.J. Mosley vs RB Jalen RichardMosley has surely not had the contract year he was hoping for so far in 2018, but he does seem rejuvenated by the bye week. He appeared to be a step quicker in pass defense against Cincinnati. Mosley’s tackling numbers are near his career averages but he has not made the game changing plays that previously garnered Pro Bowl recognition this year, with zero interceptions, zero forced fumbles, zero sacks and just two tackles for a loss.It is unlikely Doug Martin or DeAndre Washington will find much running room between the tackles with Michael Pierce and Brandon Williams stuffing the gaps. Therefore, receiving back Jalen Richard will be called upon to help move the sticks. With 51 receptions for 432 yards and an 86-percent catch rate, he is the Raiders most reliable target. If Mosley can stifle Richard, it will be a challenge for the Raiders to mount an effective attack.LG Alex Lewis vs DT Maurice HurstThe fifth round rookie defensive tackle is the lone bright spot on an Oakland defense relatively devoid of talent. Once considered a first round talent coming out of Michigan, a medical issue pushed Hurst down the draft board. He has proven the Raiders wise to take the chance on him by producing 24 solo tackles, four sacks Adult Mark Andrews Jersey , three pass deflections and a forced fumble in 10 games from the three-technique position.Lewis and center Matt Skura have been the weak links on the Ravens line. Similar to the blocking unit as a whole, the third-year guard is better in pass protection than run blocking. Nonetheless, the run-heavy Week 11 game-plan was seemingly beneficial for Lewis and he appears to be recovered from a Week 6 neck injury.Fielding the NFL’s 31st ranked run defense and 30th ranked scoring defense, the Raiders need their impressive rookie to make an impact if they hope to win on the East Coast. SS Tony Jefferson vs TE Jared CookBaltimore’s issues defending tight ends have been an ongoing problem. Cook is the Raiders top playmaker, his 65 targets and four touchdowns lead the team. And his 12.8-yards per reception is one of the best marks at the position across the league.Coordinator Martindale should be able to give Jefferson help in coverage because the Raiders lack threatening wide receivers. Still, the Ravens safety pairing has been average at best in coverage this season. Jefferson and Eric Weddle have graded as PFF’s #26 and #24 safeties, respectively. A lack of speed in the middle of the field has prevented the unit from dictating tempo.Neutralizing Cook would allow the defense to truly dominate Oakland.Score prediction: Ravens 23, Raiders 6AFC North Preview: Week 5 Week 4 of the NFL season is officially in the books. Cincinnati and Baltimore sit atop the AFC North at 3-1 while Cleveland and Pittsburgh both tie for last place at 1-2-1. The nation has begun to recognize the Bengals and Ravens, the Browns have hope for the first time in a long time and the sky seems to be falling for the Steelers. What’s in store for all four teams in Week 5?Baltimore Ravens (3-1)After an impressive 26-14 victory in Heinz Field over Pittsburgh, Baltimore now faces another division rival on the road, this time in Cleveland. The Browns are led by rookie quarterback and former Heisman-winner Baker Mayfield, who lit the league on fire with a comeback win in Week 3 against the New York Jets. The Ravens are 15-5 against rookie quarterbacks under head coach John Harbaugh. Mayfield has a cast of talented targets, including wide receiver Jarvis Landry Miles Boykin Baltimore Ravens Jersey , rookie Antonio Callaway and tight end David Njoku. Running backs Carlos Hyde, Nick Chubb and Duke Johnson combine for a talented group on the ground as well.Cleveland’s defense leads the league in takeaways with 13 through the first four weeks. Second-year player Myles Garrett has developed into one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers with 4.5 sacks on the season. Rookie cornerback Denzel Ward has lived up to his fourth-overall draft status thus far, intercepting Ben Roethlisberger twice in his first NFL game. Quarterback Joe Flacco will have to continue to protect the football against the Browns opportunistic defense. Cleveland Browns (1-2-1)After a disappointing loss to the Raiders in Week 4, Cleveland will look to rebound with a win over a divisional rival when they play the Ravens on Sunday. Baltimore’s passing offense has given team’s fits thus far with a wide variety of targets. The Browns will have to find a way to contain deep threat John Brown, who is averaging 22.53 yards per catch, with a long of 71. Cleveland must keep a lid on Brown and force the Ravens other receivers to make plays underneath. Forcing Flacco into mistakes is the key to pulling the upset on Sunday. Myles Garrett will surely draw the focus of Baltimore’s game plan, so if he is able to get to Flacco regardless of being double teamed, then the Browns will have a solid chance of stopping the Ravens offense.Mayfield will have to be extremely careful against Baltimore’s second-ranked defense, particularly their loaded secondary. Cornerback Jimmy Smith returns from suspension this week, giving the Ravens four extremely solid corners in Smith, Marlon Humphrey, Tavon Young and Brandon Carr. Safeties Eric Weddle and Tony Jefferson are both playing at a high level this season as well. Mayfield must remain poised and collected despite the variety of looks defensive coordinator Don Martindale will throw at him on Sunday. Getting the running game going will be key for Cleveland’s offense finding success.Cincinnati Bengals (3-1)After a narrow 37-36 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati now plays host to the 3-1 Miami Dolphins on Sunday.Quarterback Andy Dalton has started the season strong and will likely continue on Sunday against the Dolphins 26th-ranked defense. Running back Joe Mixon is poised to return on Sunday after missing two games with a knee injury. Mixon was off to a fast start before injuring his knee in Week 2. Unfortunately Womens Miles Boykin Jersey , tight end Tyler Eifert will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury suffered last week. Eifert was a key component to the Bengals passing attack.Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has looked solid so far in his return this season, leading Miami to a 3-1 start. Stopping running backs Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake and forcing Tannehill to pass the ball will give Cincinnati an advantage. The Dolphins have several injuries along the offensive line, so the Bengals pass rush, led by Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap, should have no problem getting to Tannehill and forcing him into making mistakes. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2-1)The Steelers are coming off of a lackluster performance at home in a 26-14 loss and will now face the 1-3 Falcons in Pittsburgh. Atlanta’s seventh-ranked offense will provide a daunting challenge for the Steelers struggling defense, which is currently ranked 30th in the NFL. The Falcons passing attack will prove especially challenging for Pittsburgh’s secondary.Julio Jones remains one of the top wide receivers in the game and rookie Calvin Ridley currently leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns with six. The Steelers cornerbacks will have to find a way to limit Atlanta’s explosive receivers.Luckily for Pittsburgh, the Falcons defense has been almost as bad, ranking 28th in the league. With linebacker Deion Jones and safety Keanu Neal both out, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could be in store for a bounce-back performance. Tight ends Vance McDonald and Jesse James will provide favorable match ups for the Steelers offense. In what is expected to be an offensive shootout, a win over Atlanta will go a long way in righting the ship for Pittsburgh and potentially saving their season.

A to Z with the Panthers: An alphabetical guide to training camp The Panthers kick off training camp later this evening Will Grier Carolina Panthers Jersey , and to get you ready for the big event I’ve stolen an idea from our friends over at Windy City Gridiron by breaking down the topics you should follow in a handy A-Z format. So, without further ado, let’s alphabet together, y’all!A-Z guide to Panthers training campA - Mike Adams: Adams is the senior member of the Panthers secondary at 37 years young. The biggest question for him heading into the season is can he withstand the grind of a full 16-game season at his age? The Panthers are counting on his veteran leadership to lead a young secondary, so hopefully he’ll be able to produce at a high level for at least one more season.B - Backup QBs: The backup quarterback situation is probably the biggest question no oneknows the answer to heading into training camp. With the Panthers parting ways with Derek Anderson, there’s a big question mark over who will backup Cam Newton this year. The two biggest candidates for the job are Garrett Gilbert and Taylor Heinicke, but Kyle Allen will also give it a go in camp for the next few weeks. Hopefully one of them pulls away as the clear leader of the pack at some point this preseason.C - Cam Newton: The Panthers will go as Cam goes this season, so hopefully his recent Instagram posts are indicative of the kind of season Newton will have. He’s opened up more on social media as of late, and we all know that when Cam’s having fun positive results on the field tend to follow (see: 2015). D - D.J. Moore: The Panthers drafted Moore in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft in an effort to boost the offense around Newton. Moore will have a chance to make an impact almost immediately, and it will be interesting to see what he does with that opportunity.E - Elijah Hood: The Panthers acquired Hood off waivers after he was released by the Raiders earlier this offseason. The Panthers have a crowded backfield at running back, but Hood could latch on to the roster as the third or fourth stringer with a solid training camp and preseason. He’ll be competing with Cameron Artis-Payne and Kenjon Barner, so he’ll most likely have to contribute on special teams to make the 53-man roster.F - Devin Funchess: Funchess is in the final year of his contract and would probably like to prove that he deserves a long-term deal either here in Carolina or somewhere else in the league. I would expect to see good things from him this season.G - Rashaan Gaulden: Gaulden is one of the rookies trying to make an impact on the team in his first year. He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and will play safety for the Panthers. He’s definitely one of the ones to watch in training camp this year, as the Panthers desperately need quality depth at the safety position. Hopefully he can provide some.H - Daeshon Hall: We didn’t get to see Hall last year due to a knee injury Blue Will Grier Jersey , so this is almost like a second rookie year for him. The Panthers need youth at defensive end, so his development into a quality rotational player (and future starter) is critical for the defense this year. I - Ian Thomas: The Panthers drafted Thomas in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the hope that he can be the No. 2 tight end by season’s end. An injury to Chris Manhertz will give Thomas a head start on his quest to see the field, and the Panthers will certainly hope he can step up to the task at hand.J - Donte Jackson: Donte ‘Action’ Jackson was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft and should compete with Kevon Seymour and Ross Cockrell for playing time across from James Bradberry in the No. 2 cornerback position. Jackson could also spend a lot of time in the nickel corner spot, which probably suits him best.K - Luke Kuechly: Kuechly is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is cleared to take part in training camp practices. He’s not expected to miss any time and he’s prepared to dominate the league like he does every other year. L - Left guard: In what will probably be the biggest position battle of training camp, the Panthers have several candidates to fill the void left by the departure of Andrew Norwell. Amini Silatolu is penciled in as the starter, but the Panthers brought in a veteran (Jeremiah Sirles) and a group of UDFAs to compete for the open spot on the offensive line. The Panthers’ season could depend on who wins this camp battle, so watch it closely.M - Christian McCaffrey: Run CMC is back for his second year and is expected to feature a lot more heavily in the Panthers’ offense this year. Can he succeed as an every down lead back? The Panthers are hoping so. I still expect them to use him as an X-factor weapon as well by lining him up out wide several times per game to get him the ball in space so he can do what he does best—make people miss.N - Norv Turner: The Panthers replaced former offensive coordinator Mike Shula with seasoned veteran Norv Turner this offseason, and the Panthers are expected to see an improvement on offense under his tutelage. Whether that brings better on-field results is yet to be seen, but I’m confident that we will see a positive difference in the offense this year versus the last several seasons.O - Greg Olsen: Olsen is ready to go after missing over half the season in 2017 due to a broken ankle that robbed him of a chance to be the first tight end to have four straight 1000-yard seasons. He’s expected to be 100% for the start of camp and should be an important piece to the offense this season, as usual.P - Julius Peppers: Peppers will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to offseason shoulder surgery, but he should be ready to go by the time the regular season starts. Besides, he could probably get 8-10 sacks with one arm tied behind his back anyway. Friendly reminder for when he blows your mind at how dominant he is—he’s 38 years old. We’ll type that a lot this season.Q - Quinterrius Eatmon: Eatmon is one of the players competing for a guard spot. I’ll be real with you—nothing else starts with Q. You probably knew that already Wes Horton Jersey 2019 , though.R - Ryan Kalil: Will Kalil’s neck hold up for one last ride? He’s expected to retire at the end of this season, so hopefully he can make it through the year in one piece while grooming the center of the future—whoever that may be. Also, can we win a Super Bowl for him in his last year, please? That would be awesome, wouldn’t it?S - Shaq Thompson: Can Thompson step in to the starting linebacker role for the first four games of the season while Thomas Davis serves his suspension? The Panthers drafted him in the first round a few years ago to be Davis’ eventual replacement, so they’ll get a good look at him doing that for the first four games this year.T - Thomas Davis: With Davis suspended for the first four games of the season, can the defense function without him? Will those four games off actually benefit him this year? Will the extra time off save some fuel in the tank for a late-season playoff run? Only time will tell.U - Underdogs: The Panthers are heading into the 2018 season with hardly anyone believing they can return to the playoffs despite going 11-5 last year. That’s just the way we like it, though, since they seem to play much better when no one believes in them.V - Greg Van Roten: Is Van Roten in the mix at left guard, or do the Panthers see him as Ryan Kalil’s eventual replacement at center? Either way, I’d like to see him get some snaps this year because I think he’s pretty good.W - Wofford College: The Panthers will host training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC again this year, as they have every year since they joined the league. X - X-Receiver: The Panthers have an interesting position battle going on at wide receiver. We have a good idea of the six guys who will make the 53-man roster (Funchess Blue Wes Horton Jersey , Moore, Curtis Samuel, Damiere Byrd, Torrey Smith, Jarius Wright), but where those six players stack up on the depth chart and/or line up on the field is still a mystery. I think we’ll learn more about who goes where as training camp progresses.Y - Youth movement: The Panthers need to get younger at a few positions (defensive end, notably) and are experiencing an influx of young players at others (secondary, for example). Watching the younger players integrate into the team will be something to look out for over the next few weeks.Z - Zero losses: That’s the goal, of course. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY SportsEd Mulholland-USA TODAY SportsAfter a long and storied career with the Carolina Panthers punctuated by a forgettable footnote of six carries for 17 yards backing up Saquon Barkley with the New York Giants, Jonathan Stewart signed a one day contract to formally retire from the NFL as part of the Carolina Panthers.Stewart, aka Beef Stew, J-Stew, and Stewie, amongst others.. finishes his career as the all-time leading rusher for the Carolina Panthers franchise. In ten seasons with the Panthers, he rung in 7,318 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns on the ground plus 162 receptions for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. What is even crazier to think that without some recurring injury issues and a timeshare as half of “Double Trouble” alongside DeAngelo Williams, he would have easily smashed through the 10 Youth Brian Burns Jersey ,000 yard mark, and maybe well beyond.Stewart is without a doubt the greatest running back this franchise has ever had, and the Double Trouble pairing with DeAngelo Williams stands as one of the most effective duos in modern NFL history. This is the final injury report before Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. It looks like those of us looking for the younger wide receivers like Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore to get more playing time are going to get their wish this Sunday Youth Cameron Artis-Payne Jersey , as both Devin Funchess and Torrey Smith are at least questionable to play. Here’s today’s full injury report:Panthers injury reportDid not participate in practiceWR Devin Funchess (back) - DoubtfulLimited participation in practiceDE Julius Peppers (rest)WR Torrey Smith (knee) - QuestionableFull participation in practiceS Mike Adams (rest)DE Mario Addison (shoulder)CB James Bradberry (shoulder)C Ryan Kalil (rest)OT Marshall Newhouse (illness)TE Greg Olsen (rest/foot)LB Shaq Thompson (shoulder)DE Julius Peppers (rest)Practice StatusDid not participate in practice = 0% of a player’s normal repetitionsLimited participation in practice = Less than 100% of a player’s normal repetitionsFull participation in practice = 100% of a player’s normal repetitionsGame StatusOut = Player will not playDoubtful = Player unlikely to playQuestionable = Uncertain if player will play Plays to Love, Plays to Hate (aka “P2L, P2H”) looks at the most significant plays in swinging momentum and impacting the eventual outcome of the game. There is always plenty to hate about NFL officiating, so we will only focus on the plays on the field, not the refs.Three plays to love1st Quarter 1:29 – Panthers 7, Browns 7. Browns ball 2nd-and-12 at CLE 12The Situation: The Browns were backed up to their own 12 yard line late in the first quarter of a 7-7 game. The Play: Rashard Higgins caught a short pass and was nailed by Luke Kuechly. Luke stripped the ball from Higgins and Thomas Davis recovered at the Cleveland 17. Kuechly’s forced fumble led to a Panthers touchdown and a 14-7 lead.2nd Quarter 8:22 – Panthers 14, Browns 14. Panthers ball 1st-and-10 at CAR 18The Situation: The Browns had just evened the score at 14 with a 51-yard bomb. On the first play of the Panthers next drive, D.J. Moore did his thing. The Play: Moore caught a 10-yard quick slant with Cleveland defenders surrounding him. Moore spun away from the first tackler then broke three more tackles en route to a spectacular 40 yard catch and run to the Cleveland 42. This was the key play in setting up a Panthers field goal and a 17-14 lead. 3rd Quarter 10:41 – Panthers 17, Browns 17. Panthers ball 4th-and-1 at CLE 45The Situation: Facing 4th-and-1 on the wrong side of midfield, Ron Rivera & Co. decided to trust the offense and go for it.The Play: The Panthers lined up with a jumbo set, signaling a predictable quarterback sneak or a power run. Instead, Cam Newton went play action and hit Ian Thomas for a nine yard gain. This drive ultimately ended with a field goal and a 20-17 Panthers lead.Three plays to hate2nd Quarter 8:35 – Panthers 14, Browns 7. Browns ball 3rd-and-17 at CLE 49The Situation: Carolina was up by seven points in the second quarter and forced Cleveland into a 3rd-and-17 from near midfield. The Play: As per usual, the Panthers defense botched a third-and-a-mile scenario. This time Baker Mayfield felt pressure, rolled left to buy time, and uncorked a perfect bomb to Jarvis Landry for a 51-yard touchdown. Landry beat Eric Reid who was close in coverage Stitched Cameron Artis-Payne Jersey , but not close enough to stop the incredibly accurate pass for a momentum-shifting score. 3rd Quarter 14:52 – Panthers 17, Browns 17. Panthers ball 1st-and-10 at CLE 32The Situation: Luke Kuechly stripped Jarvis Landry on the first play of the third quarter and the Panthers recovered at the Cleveland 32. The Carolina offense was given a gift to break the 17-17 tie.The Play(s): There are three plays to hate on this clown show of a sequence. On 1st-and-10 Norv Turner thought it was a good idea to have D.J. Moore block Myles Garrett with no help. Not surprisingly, Garrett abused Moore and dropped Christian McCaffrey for an eight yard loss. Later, on 3rd-and-13, Devin Funchess ran open on a seam route but never turned his head to see the quick release from Cam Newton. If Funch turns around he likely picks up big yards here. Next, on fourth down, the Panthers lined up for a 52-yard field goal but were called for a delay of game. Off came the field goal unit and on came the punt team. Carolina started at the Cleveland 32 and ended up punting. Ridiculous. 3rd Quarter 8:30 – Panthers 17, Browns 17. Panthers ball 2nd-and-Goal at CLE 3The Situation: After Ian Thomas converted on 4th-and-1 the Panthers drove down to the Cleveland three yard line. The Play: Christian McCaffrey took a handoff off the left side and pranced into the end zone for a touchdown and an apparent 24-17 Panthers lead. But the joy - and the touchdown - was nullified by a holding penalty on Taylor Moton. Carolina could never overcome the 10-yard penalty and were forced to settle for a field goal. Moton’s penalty cost the team four points.Closing it out and summing it upOnce again the Panthers were horrible stopping third-and-long situations. In addition to Jarvis Landry’s 51-yard score on 3rd-and-17, Carolina also gave up a conversion on 3rd-and-9 late in the second quarter followed by a 3rd-and-10 that should have been an easy touchdown but Rashard Higgins just dropped it. I’m sick of our corners being two steps out of position and both safeties being two seconds too late with help over the top.Did I “hate” Cam Newton missing Jarius Wright on 4th-and-Goal from the three yard line with 2:39 left, trailing by six? Of course I did! It’s a throw our franchise quarterback needs to make. But let’s face it, the offense took at least seven points off the board with the punt after Luke’s forced fumble (should’ve turned this into a field goal at least) and by Taylor Moton’s holding penalty turning a touchdown into a field goal. It’s stupid plays and sequences like these that are killing the Panthers, not just Cam’s overthrows. But Cam did look pretty terrible in the second half. He had zero touch. Almost every pass had the velocity of a bazooka. He keeps throwing 100 MPH fastballs when the better throw is to get some air under it and let his receivers run it down. The sequence that looked particularly bad was when the Panthers got possession with 13:05 left in the fourth quarter. On first and second downs he overthrew open receivers with inaccurate heaters that went over their heads. Then on third down he underthrew an open Curtis Samuel on a deep route and the pass was broken up. Samuel had two steps on T.J. Carrie and an accurate pass here would have been a long gain, if not a touchdown. It’s a broken record at this point. Defense can’t get stops on third-and-long. Chris Clark can’t protect Cam Newton’s blindside. The offense leaves points on the field. Cam is then forced to navigate various come-from-behind scenarios without being able to make any mistakes, which is when he starts pressing and overthrowing his targets. Panthers lose.
